Important Bills Pending in Sacramento

A broad range of bills may be helpful to civil liberties folks…

Assembly Bill 1542 (Ward) – Bans the sale of sensitive personal information by California businesses

Assembly Bill 1807 (Gabriel) – Bans the use of state property and facilities by federal immigration enforcement

Assembly Bill 2568 (Ward) – Limits businesses ability to customize prices based on surveillance data

Assembly Bill 2631 (Bauer-Kahan) –  Prevents responses to out of state and some federal warrants and subpoenas when the purpose is related to criticism of the government

Senate Bill 937 (Gonzalez) — Prohibits use of flashbangs for crowd control (adds them to AB 48)

Senate Bill 957 (Perez) – Requires social media companies to notify a person if they get an order to provide information on their social media activity

Senate Bill 1013 (Cervantes) – 30 day retention, case file recording and limits on usable hotlists for ALPR

Assembly Bill 2664 (Bauer-Kahan) 100 foot perimeter around any religious institution for leaflets, signs or protests

Senate Bill 690 (Caballero) Guts the California Invasion of Privacy Act

All of these bills, and about 1,000 others are (mostly) heading into the Appropriations cycle, and if they survive on August 14th, they will be one hop from the governor. They will all be voted on between August 25th and August 31st.

1. You can submit written comments on any bill via the advocacy portal. Set up an account, search for the bill by the bill number, and send your comments in via a word or pdf document.

2. Alternatively, make sure your local representatives (one senator and one assembly member) knows where you stand on any of these bills. You can email their offices at the following addresses. Feel free to include other Northern California reps.
